Buckles won in cutting horse competitions.

"Every challenge is an opportunity to innovate."

Katy Fornas, founder of Prime Prospect Horses LLC, epitomizes the fusion of rustic authenticity and modern innovation in the high-end performance horse industry. She chose to leave home at fourteen, moving to a rustic single-room cabin on a 2,860-acre ranch-based school surrounded by over two hundred miles of National Wilderness. Modern conveniences like heated water were absent and electricity was a recently-added luxury. "Needs not Wants" was the school's unofficial motto and students adapted to be resourceful- doing more with less.  This backdrop of hardy living taught Katy invaluable lessons in perseverance and the importance of community, themes that have woven through her life and career.

After graduating, Katy worked as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician before returning to academic pursuits. Aside from a sense of camaraderie, these positions also contributed to her resilience and ability to handle high-pressure situations, skills that would again become advantageous in the competitive world of cutting horses and business.

At California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Katy not only immersed herself in the equine and cattle operations but also harnessed the school's "Learn by Doing" philosophy to broaden her business and marketing skills. She leveraged her practical experience and innovation, working cows and young horses by day and creating promotional videos for trainers and Cal Poly by night. During her time at Cal Poly, she also created a groundbreaking software program for analyzing all of the NCHA and NRCHA horse industry sales and trends, which was then turned around and utilized by breeders to supplement breeding decisions and procure higher settlements from equine insurance companies.

Once she obtained her Animal Science degree from Cal Poly, she worked for several NCHA Hall of Fame trainers, further honing her experience in the cutting horse domain. Despite taking time off to start a family, her passion for the sport never waned. In 2018, Katy petitioned to be reinstated as a NCHA Amateur and in 2021 made her first two major limited age finals, picking up a third-place win in the Will Rogers Arena on her mare, Baby Blu Eyz. She has since shown all over the western US picking up checks from Las Vegas, California, Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, and of course, her home state, Texas.

While looking for venues to sell her own yearlings, Katy became aware of the lack of online options that showcased prospect horses. Most auctions did very little to market horses that were too young to have a show record; one popular auction only accepted prospects from consignors who used them exclusively for their reprouctive work. Many breeders had resorted to social media groups, plagued by spammers and shutdowns, to sell their prospect horses. By evaluating existing sale organizations, Katy saw ways to improve that would be beneficial to both buyers and sellers while also giving her a chance to give back to the cutting horse community. By combining her hands-on education with her technical talents, she has generated a sophisticated platform that blends a deep understanding of equine quality with advanced marketing insights.

Now residing with her family on a small ranch in Weatherford, Texas, Katy continues to live by the principles that have guided her from cabin to cutting pen: innovation, determination, community, and a profound love for the equine world. ‘Every challenge is an opportunity to innovate,' Katy says, reflecting on her journey from rustic beginnings to the pinnacle of the performance horse industry. Her professional yet approachable demeanor makes Prime Prospect Horses LLC not just a business, but a beacon for the future of high-end performance horse prospects, promising exciting advancements and community contributions in the years to come.
